Japan is now facing an unprecedented increase in the
population of elderly people over sixty-five years old.
Therefore various care and nursing systems have been
developed mostly for handicapped elderly people,
but it is also important to lengthen the term when
elderly people can live comfortably at home.
A traditional Japanese concept “Raku-Inkyo”
means cheerful and joyful living for elderly people.
Our development named “Raku-Inkyo” aims to realize new
infill systems renovating elderly people’s dwellings
suitable for such a living environment.
In this article the results of the first phase of the
development in 2001 are reported. In the first phase
two existing housing units were partially renovated.
This experimental design, production and installation had
three targets. Firstly to develop new components needed
for such an environment. Secondly to know and breakthrough
the difficulties of installation in existing dwellings.
