Japan is now facing an unprecedented increase in the population of elderly people over sixty-five years old. Therefore various care and nursing systems have been developed mostly for handicapped elderly people, but it is also important to lengthen the term when elderly people can live comfortably at home. A traditional Japanese concept “Raku-Inkyo” means cheerful and joyful living for elderly people. Our development named “Raku-Inkyo” aims to realize new infill systems renovating elderly people’s dwellings suitable for such a living environment. This experimental design, production and installation had three targets. Firstly to develop new components needed for such an environment. Secondly to know and breakthrough the difficulties of installation in existing dwellings. Thirdly to evaluate the design from the viewpoint of residents.
