Japan promoted mass production of public housing during its rapid economic growth period. Today, these houses are facing a pressing need for renewal and rehabilitation. This article attempts to clarify adequate approaches and important challenges to successful rehabilitation of public multi-family dwellings in Japan, based on the findings of comparative consideration of previous cases of rehabilitation performed in both Japan and different overseas countries.
