TRENDS IN BUILDING REGULATIONS OF JAPAN

The Building Standard Law of Japan, which was established in 1950 and has been the most fundamental building regulation in Japan, underwent two major amendments in the past five years, giving rise to the establishment of additional legislation and amendments to other building regulations. Clarifying the trends and background of amendments to the Building Standard Law of Japan based on its history, this paper aims to suggest the legislation's intended direction through an examination of the purposes and implications of the latest major amendments on responsibilities, environmental considerations and the reconstruction of existing cities.
